Jensen, Thomas Lead UV to Doubleheader Sweep

April 3, 2007

Orem, Utah - Derrick Thomas continued his recent hot hitting while Jory Jensen pitched a gem leading Utah Valley State to a 13-4 victory over Binghamton.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Wolverines improve to 10-17 on the season. UV has also won a season-high three in games in a row.

Thomas had another strong game, going 2-for-3 with a home run and five RBI. Jensen pitched eight innings and gave up only three earned runs. Through seven, Jensen had only given up three hits and one unearned run. Thomas went 5-for-6 with a pair of homers and seven RBI in the two games.

"Jensen had good command today," UV head coach Steve Gardner said. "His slider was really good and he kept them off balance."

UV started the scoring in the bottom of the first, jumping ahead 1-0 on a RBI single by Keiki Albino to score Tyler Garretson, who led the inning off with a double.

After a scoreless second inning, the Wolverines added three runs in the bottom of the third on Thomas' three-run shot that left the yard with plenty of room to spare.

Meanwhile, Jensen cruised through his first career start. He held the Bearcats in check throughout the game. Binghamton didn't score until the fifth inning when Mike Papili plated the first run on an errant pickoff attempt.

UV exploded in the sixth to blow the game wide open. The Wolverines scored six runs on four hits to open a 10-1 lead. Austin Heaps had a two-run single while Jace Brinkerhoff added a RBI double. Thomas picked up his fourth RBI with a bases-loaded walk and the Bearcats gave UV a run with a balk. In the bottom of the seventh, Thomas added a RBI double to push his total to five.

The Bearcats added three runs late on a three-run home run by Jeff Wertepny. The Wolverines added two eighth-inning runs.

Utah Valley continues the week as it takes on in-state foe Utah in a four game series. The games on Thursday and Saturday are at Ute Field while Friday's game will be played at home.
