KEARNEY, Neb. - Sophomore 141-pounder Wyatt Ray led four Utah Valley University wrestlers that competed Saturday at the UNK Loper Open in Kearney, Neb. Ray finished with a 4-2 record at the open.

Ray began the open tournament against conference foe Chase Smith from Wyoming. Smith got the best of Ray in the bout as Ray fell by decision 5-0. Ray then bounced back nicely in the wrestleback bracket as he won four straight matches, including one over his teammate and fellow sophomore Glenn Terrano by decision, 7-3.

In the consolation semis Ray had to pull out of his match due to an injury as he fell by medical forfeit to Wyoming's Conrad Snell.

Also competing for UVU at the open was sophomore 125-pounder Paul Johnson, redshirt freshman 141-pounder Avery Garner and sophomore 141-pounder Glenn Terrano. Garner too had a good showing as he finished with a 3-2 mark on the day with two wins victories by pin and the other by technical fall. Johnson and Terrano each finished with 1-2 records at the open.

A number of other Wolverine wrestlers competed unattached to UVU on the day. Redshirt freshman 174-pounder Monte Schmalhaus led the way in that department as he finished in sixth place and a 4-3 record.

The Wolverines will be off until after Christmas and will head to Greensboro, N.C. to take part in the Southern Scuffle Dec. 29-30. Following the scuffle, UVU will host its first home dual of the season when it welcomes WWC-foe Northern Colorado Jan. 7.
