OREM, Utah - Utah Valley saw an early six-run lead vanish behind a five-home run day from BYU, falling 14-10 in front of a school-record 3,744 fans on Tuesday night Brent Brown Ballpark. The loss ends the Wolverines' (25-15) record 11-game winning streak.
The Wolverines got three in the first and after a two-run second by BYU, plated five unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to take the six-run advantage. Thanks in part to two early errors by the Cougars (19-23), UVU built an 8-2 lead thru two.
In the second, Utah Valley batted thru its lineup using a dropped fly ball in left to extend the inning. The Wolverines got a two-run single from Kevin Arendse in the frame.
BYU came back with pair in the fourth, on solo shots by Bryce Ayoso and Jonathan Cluff, and then used a seven-run sixth inning to take control of the game.
Cluff hit his second home run of the game as part of the big sixth for the Cougars, a three-run shot that got BYU within a run. The second big blow in the inning came on a two-run triple down the first base line by Stephen Wells.
Utah Valley pushed a run across in the sixth and eighth but both times those runs were answered by the Cougars.
Kevin Sloan stayed perfect, moving to 8-0 in picking up the win for BYU while Sam Armstrong took the loss and dropped to 3-2.
Blake Krahenbuhl started and pitched five innings for UVU and allowed four runs on four hits and left with an 8-4 lead and in line for a win. The Wolverines got to BYU starter Matthew Neil, chasing him after just 1.2 innings and eight runs - just one of which were earned - on eight hits.
The Wolverines had 17 hits in the game with Goose Kallunki picking up three on a pair of doubles and a single. Six other players had two-hit nights including Jace Brinkerhoff - who doubled twice and scored twice - but it wasn't enough. Cluff led BYU with a 4-for-4 night and four RBI.
Utah Valley travels to Old Westbury, New York to take on NYIT in a key Great West Conference series beginning Friday. The Wolverines lead the GWC with a 15-1 record with NYIT and Northern Colorado tied for second at 11-5.
