Wolverines Push Streak to Seven With DH Sweep

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley ran its win streak to seven with a doubleheader sweep, 14-5 and 7-2, over Houston Baptist on Friday in Great West Conference baseball at Brent Brown Ballpark.

Goose Kallunki and Billy Burgess both had six hits during the twinbill, with Kallunki homering and driving in four and Burgess going 4-for-4 in the first game. Alex Exon and Jason Zundel both added three RBIs for UVU in the opener.

The Wolverines (26-20, 18-1 in GWC) fell behind 1-0 in the first before scoring four times in their half of the inning. Kallunki had a two-out RBI single and Exon doubled with the bases loaded to plate three more.

In the the second inning, Kirk Doxey doubled off the wall in left and scored on a two-out single by Austin Heaps. After the Wolverines got three more in the third, the Huskies (15-36, 13-10) answered with three before Kallunki's home run in the bottom of the fourth gave UVU an 8-1 lead.

UVU pulled away with a five-run fifth, getting a two-run single from Kallunki, an RBI double from Burgess and a two-run double by Zundel.

Kyle Beecher got the win in the first game after throwing 3.1 innings in relief, improving to 2-2 on the year.

In the nightcap, Houston Baptist scored a single run in the top of the first and carried a 1-0 lead into the third.

The Wolverines took advantage of a pair of HBU errors and got triples from both Doxey and Chris Benson and a double from Heaps to score five times in the third. Five different players drove in a single run in the inning.

In the sixth, Doxey and Kai Hatch both had RBI singles to push the lead to 7-1.

Zane Gray pitched 7.1 innings for Utah Valley to get the win and move to 3-1. Gray allowed two runs on eight hits in winning his third straight decision.

The Wolverines will go for the series sweep on Saturday at 11 a.m. Blake Krahenbuhl will get the start on the mound for UVU.
