MALIBU, Calif. -Â Utah Valley University's bats were kept silent by Pepperdine starter Corey Miller in a 5-0 series-opening loss to the Waves. Miller pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout, striking out 11 while walking just one.
He retired 15 straight at one point and didn't surrender a hit until Zach Slesk's two-out double in the sixth. Zac Fuller had the only other hit for the Wolverines (2-4), a single in the eighth.
The Waves (4-1) scored twice in the first, taking advantage of a lead off walk and a hit batter. Bryan Langlois, who went 2-for-3, drove home the first run in the first. Aaron Brown followed Langlois with a sac-fly. Brown finished with three RBIs on the day.
Pepperdine scored twice again in the third and once more in the fifth. The Waves finished with seven hits.
Devin Nelson (0-2) took the loss while Miller (1-1) picked up the win and hasn't allowed an earned run in two starts this season. Freshman Patrick Wolfe had his first collegiate appearance in the eighth and threw a scoreless inning.
The series continues on Saturday with a 2 p.m. MT first pitch.
