OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University's six-game winning streak came to an end in the opener of a three-game WAC series, 6-2, against Texas-Pan American on Friday night at Brent Brown Ballpark.
The Wolverines (13-19, 6-4) made a last-ditch effort to rally in the ninth, but left the potential tying run in the on-deck circle.
Sam Street pitched his sixth complete game for the Broncs (14-22, 4-6) allowing two runs (one earned) run on six hits. Street (8-0) has accounted for over half of UTPA's wins this season and three of the team's five WAC victories. Andrew Freter (2-5) surrendered five runs in six innings in taking the loss.
"I thought we had some chances early on but didn't take advantage of them and really let Street settle in," said head coach Eric Madsen. "He's too good of a pitcher to not jump at chances when you have the opportunity. Tomorrow we need to regroup and come to the ballpark with a better approach."
The Broncs got one in the second and two more in the third to lead 3-0 early. The run in the second came when Lee Rios doubled home a run before Alex Howe doubled in the second to make it 2-0. Howe scored when Alberto Morales singled him home to give UTPA a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Wolverines loaded the bases with nobody out but were only able to push one run across, on a groundball by Beau Kallas, that scored Sean Moysh.
Texas-Pan American used two more doubles in the sixth to add two more runs, giving the Broncs a 5-1 lead. Edgar Cordon then pushed it to 6-1 with his first home run, on the first pitch in the top of the seventh. Five of the Broncs' 10 hits went for extra bases including three doubles.
Kade Andrus and Greyson Bogden both had hits in the ninth, Bogden's drove in Andrus from third, but Shane Ammon tracked down Moysh's fly ball to the wall in left to end the game.
Street threw 137 pitches, surpassing the 100 mark for the ninth time in nine starts this season. He has thrown at least 123 pitches in a game seven times.
The series continues on Saturday at 6 p.m. with Ryan Evans set to start on the mound for Utah Valley.
