OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University dropped its home finale, 2-0, to No. 13 Seattle U on Saturday night at Clyde Field.
The Wolverines (13-5-1, 6-3-1) are now set for next week's WAC Tournament in Kansas City as the No. 2 seed. The Redhawks (16-3-0, 9-1-0) finished an impressive WAC regular season with just one loss and as winners of 14 of their last 15 matches. They are the regular season champion and the top seed in the tournament.
"We played a very good Seattle side that is deserving of its national recognition," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "The conditions were very quick and they adjusted better than we did. I thought we got caught reacting to the game more than trying to dictate."
Â
The game was scoreless until the 44th minute when Sam Langston served the ball from the left corner to David Olsen, who scored his 12th goal of the year with a header to the far post over UVU keeper
Collin Partee.
Â
Langston and Olsen connected again in the 55th minute with Olsen taking a first touch and then striking it just inside the far post for goal No. 13 and a 2-0 Redhawks lead.
Â
Prior to the game UVU honored its only senior,
Tyler Brown, who returned to the team after being struck by a car last December.
"I told the team after the game how proud I was of him for his commitment, determination and perseverance following a catastrophic accident. For him to finish on the field in our final home match was something special," Maas said.
Â
By virtue of finishing second in the WAC regular season, the Wolverines receive a bye into the semifinals of next week's tournament. UVU will play the winner of the No. 3 seed vs No. 6 seed match. The tournament bracket will be finalized on Sunday following the league's final regular season contest.
