SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Valley University dropped a midweek match up at in-state foe Utah, 9-3, on Tuesday night at Smith's Ballpark.
Kade Andrus hit a two-run home run for the Wolverines, but a five-run fourth from the Utes proved too much to overcome.
Andrus drove in all three runs for UVU (4-16), including a two-out RBI single in the third for an early 1-0 lead.
The Utes (7-12), who notched their fifth win in their last six contests, had four different players deliver RBIs in the fourth inning including a two-run single from Kody Davis. Utah added two more in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-1.
Andrus' home run, his second of the season, came in the top of the eighth to center field and got the Wolverines within four runs but the Utes got both of those runs back in the bottom of the frame.
Utah finished with 12 hits -- three coming from Wyler Smith -- while Andrus and
Greyson Bogden combined for four of Utah Valley's five hits with two apiece.
Four different Utah pitchers combined to strike out 13, with starter Dylan Drachler (1-2) striking out seven in 5.0 innings to pick up the win.
Utah Valley and Utah will meet again two more times this season: April 14 back in Salt Lake City and May 5 at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem.
The Wolverines now open WAC play this weekend with a three-games series at Seattle University at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, Wash. The Wolverines were picked to finish fifth in the coaches' preseason poll, right behind Seattle U.
