BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Behind a complete game from James Barragan, CSU Bakersfield topped Utah Valley University, 5-2, on Saturday night at Hardt Field to even the three-game WAC series. The rubber match is Sunday at noon PT/1 p.m. MT.
The Wolverines (6-19, 2-3) had two hits apiece from
Kody Moon and
Greyson Bogden, but the Roadrunners (13-13-1, 2-2-1) finished with 14 hits behind Barragan. Soloman Williams was 3-for-4 to help CSUB to the win, despite the 'Runners stranding 15 runners.
CSUB scored three times in the bottom of the second, getting RBI singles from the bottom two hitters in the order. Christian Deaton singled home Mylz Jones and, after a wild pitch allowed Chance Gusbeth to score, Ross Hough had an RBI base hit to plate Deaton.
Bogden, who tripled home the winning run on Friday night, capped a two-out rally with a two-run double to left-center in the top of the fourth. After the first two hitters in the inning were retired, Moon and
Seth Rhineer had back-to-back singles and then scored on the Bogden double.
CSU Bakersfield answered though, getting a two-out double of its own by Williams to get both runs back and extend the lead back to three runs, at 5-2.
Barragan (2-3) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out seven and walked five.
Jackson Cofer (0-4) took the loss for the Wolverines. A night after UVU starter
Danny Beddes threw a Hardt Field record 149 pitches in UVU's 3-2 win, Barragan surpassed that with a 152-pitch effort -- 102 for strikes -- in his complete-game win.
Braden Poole,
Logan Hold and
Marco Briones all had scoreless outings out of the bullpen for Utah Valley.
