BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Danny Beddes lasted into the ninth inning and
Greyson Bogden delivered the go-ahead triple as Utah Valley University opened a three-game WAC series at CSU Bakersfield with a 3-2 win on Friday night at Hardt Field.
Beddes went 8.2 innings before giving way to
Kyle Valgardson, who earned his second save by striking out Joey Sanchez to end the game. Beddes allowed two runs (one earned) on seven scattered hits and struck out six to improve to 2-4 on the season. CSUB starter Hayden Carter (3-3) pitched 8.0 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits and took the loss.
Bogden's go-ahead triple to left, which turned out to be the game-winning RBI, came in the sixth with
Craig Brinkerhoff at first and one out.
"This was a good win for us. We found a way to score guys and pitch out of situations that have eluded us so far this season," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "Danny threw great and even thought we struggled at times defensively we made the plays when we needed it."
After giving up a run in the second on a wild pitch, the Wolverines (6-18, 2-2) tied the game in the third on a two-out RBI single by
Tate Harding that scored
Jake Atkinson.
Another two-out base hit, this time in the top of fifth by
Spencer Gothberg, put the Wolverines in front 2-1.
Mark Krueger, who doubled with one out in the inning, scored on the hit.
A sacrifice fly tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth but Utah Valley answered in the sixth with Bogden's triple, scoring
Craig Brinkerhoff from first with one out in the inning.
Krueger and Bogden had two hits apiece to lead UVU while the Roadrunners (12-13-1, 1-2-1) got two hits from Sanchez.
The series continues on Saturday with a 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT first pitch.
