OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley University's 2015 home opener was spoiled by Saint Mary's, 11-1, on Friday night at Brent Brown Ballpark. The Gaels' offense did all of its damage in the first five innings including a pair of four-run frames in the third and fourth innings. The Wolverines (2-9) were held scoreless until
Kody Moon singled home
Seth Rhineer in the bottom if the eighth inning for the freshman's first career RBI.
"Our guys have to recognize and buy in to what we're trying to accomplish and show some competitiveness," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "It's embarrassing to go out and play like that in our home opener where another team controls you the entire night. But give credit to Saint Mary's, they came to the park ready to play."
The Gaels (8-5) got a strong performance from starting pitcher Corbin Burnes (3-0) who struck out eight and allowed three hits in 6.0 innings. Four different Wolverine relievers pitched scoreless innings over the final four frames, including
Brett Snyder, who pitched a scoreless seventh inning in his collegiate debut.
Danny Beddes (1-3) took the loss for Utah Valley.
The series continues on Saturday in a doubleheader starting at noon MT.
