OREM, Utah -- Despite a three-run home run from senior
Kade Andrus in the eighth inning and seven runs over the final three innings, the Utah Valley University baseball team dropped the first game of a doubleheader 14-9 to Saint Mary's.
The Gaels (9-5) scored in seven of the nine innings, including five of the first six, and led 10-2 after six innings. The Wolverines (2-10) rallied with five runs over the next two frames with Andrus' home run, his first of the year, coming in the eighth and cutting a six-run deficit to three. Saint Mary's added on four runs in the top of the ninth to pull away.
UVU collected 13 hits with
Spencer Gothberg and
Jordan Schlehuber leading the way with three apiece. Schlehuber, Gothberg, and freshman
Tate Harding drove in two runs each to lead the UVU offense. The Gaels finished with 17 hits, three each from Brent Rasso and Connor Hornsby with Zach Kirtley driving in three runs.
Freshman
Jackson Cofer took the loss on the mound as he gave up six runs (three earned), eight hits, and two walks while striking out three in five innings of work. The Wolverines committed six costly errors that led to five unearned runs in the game.
Johnny York picked up the win for Saint Mary's on the mound in 6.0 innings of work, giving up two earned runs on eight hits and striking out 10. Overall, the Saint Mary's pitching staff combined to strike out 14 Wolverine hitters.
