OREM, Utah -- Tate Harding had a team season-high five RBIs as Utah Valley University also posted season highs in runs and hits in a 10-7 win over Saint Mary's in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader.
Kade Andrus, who homered in the first game of the day, had three of the team's 15 hits while
Spencer Gothberg drove in three runs.
"We came in early and worked hard this morning and I was pleased with the way we progressed offensively throughout the day," UVU head coach
Eric Madsen said. "I was disappointed with the way we played defensively in the first game. It was the difference in the game. In the second game Logan (Hold) did a nice job in relief and we were aggressive offensively. Saint Mary's is a very good team and when they get on a roll they're hard to stop."
After the Gaels' (9-6) Zach Kirtley hit a solo homerun to put the Gaels up 1-0 in the top of the first, the Wolverines (3-10) answered with a three-run rally lead by Gothberg's two-run single.
Zac Fuller came home on a
Mark Krueger sacrifice fly to put UVU up 4-1 in the second.
The Saint Mary's offense put together a five-run rally in the top of the third, started by Collin Ferguson's three-run homerun.
Harding delivered the big hit in the fourth: a two-out, bases-loaded double that cleared the bases and gave UVU a 7-6 lead. Â Another three-run rally in the sixth extended the lead to 10-6. The Gaels' final run of the night came on a ninth inning solo shot by Ferguson, his second home run of the night.
Hold (1-0) got his first win in a Wolverine uniform, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing two runs on two hits and striking out five. Billy Oxford (1-1) took the loss for Saint Mary's.
Utah Valley goes for a series split of the four-game set on Sunday at noon.
