OREM, Utah – Zac Fuller had four hits including his first career homerun to lead Utah Valley University to a come-from-behind victory over the Sacramento State, 11-9, on Saturday night at Brent Brown Ballpark. The win clinches a third consecutive WAC series win, is UVU's fifth straight league win, and is the team's sixth win in the last seven games overall.
"I'm really proud of the way the guys are playing right now. They're starting to trust what they know and doing good things and playing like they're capable of," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "This win tonight gives us the opportunity to sweep, which would be a very big thing against a great team."
The Wolverines (12-20, 8-3) jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the bottom of third on a
Spencer Gothberg RBI single that scored
Mark Krueger and
Greyson Bogden before an RBI base hit from
Jake Atkinson.
After the Hornets (18-15, 6-5) scored a run in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-2, the Wolverines put another run on the board when Fuller hit his home run, a solo shot to left field, to make it 5-2.
Sacramento State answered by putting a six spot on the board in the top of the fifth inning including a three-run homer by Scotty Burcham and a solo home run by Gunner Pollman to take an 8-4 lead. The Hornets added another run in the top of the sixth on a Chris Lewis RBI single to make it 9-4.
Utah Valley responded in the bottom of the sixth with an offensive outburst that produced the game's final seven runs. The first eight hitters reached base and the Wolverines sent 11 hitters to the plate in the inning.
Jordan Schlehuber delivered a two-run single,
Mark Krueger lined a two-run double to left center and
Greyson Bogden singled home
Kade Andrus to tie the game, still with nobody out. Gothberg had an RBI groundout that put the Wolverines in front 10-9 and
Andy Perkins had the final RBI on a base hit to left that plated Gothberg.
Boyd Bell came out of the bullpen to pitch a scoreless seventh and eighth for UVU, striking out four of the six hitters he retired. He relieved
Brett Snyder (2-0) who picked up the win for UVU on the mound after throwing 1.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits and one strikeout. With a man on and nobody out in the ninth,
Kyle Valgardson came in to close the door and earn his third save, retiring three straight to finish the game. Sam Long, last year's WAC Freshman of the Year, took the loss for Sac State and dropped to 5-2.
"To score those runs and then have Boyd come in and stop them really changed the outcome of the game for us. Those shutdown innings were huge for us," Madsen said.
UVU will look to sweep the three game series on Sunday at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. MT.
