Sac State tops Wolverines to avoid series sweep

UVU play at Utah on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University saw its streak of six straight WAC wins end on Sunday in a 13-2 loss to Sacramento State, falling short of it's attempt to secure a series sweep. The Hornets scored in five of the seven innings and broke the game open with an eight-run sixth inning in the run-rule shortened finale of the three game series at Brent Brown Ballpark.

Sac State (19-15, 7-5) had three different players hit three home runs including Chris Lewis' three-run shot in the eight-run frame. Down 5-2 in the fifth, the Wolverines (12-21, 8-4) had bases loaded and nobody out but failed to score before the Hornets pulled away in the next half-inning.

"Give them credit, they got great contributions throughout their lineup. When we couldn't score in the fifth inning we really missed chance to change the momentum and they really took advantage of that," UVU head coach Eric Madsen.

Zac Fuller continued his hot streak for UVU with a pair of RBI singles. He ended the weekend 6-for-8 with a solo home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Andy Perkins also added two hits for the Wolverines. Lewis and Scotty Burcham both had three hits and three RBIs for Sac State.

Kaden Schmitt (0-2) took the loss on the mound for UVU as he gave up four runs on six hits, one walk and one strikeout in 3.0 innings of work. Justin Dillon (4-3) earned the win for the Hornets as he tossed 5.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, along with three walks, and four strikeouts.

UVU travels to Salt Lake City for a midweek contest against the University of Utah at Smith's Ballpark on Tuesday evening with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. MT. The Wolverines head to Colorado for four games over the weekend beginning on Friday at Northern Colorado in a three-game WAC series. They'll play a non-conference game next Monday, April 20 at Air Force.
