GREELEY, Colo. – Kade Andrus hit a game-tying, three-run home run in the sixth inning, but Northern Colorado got a run in the seventh in taking opener, 7-6, in the Saturday's WAC series opener. Saturday was scheduled for a doubleheader, but weather changed the schedule to a Sunday twin bill for the final two games of the series, slated to begin at 11 a.m. MT.
The Bears (10-21, 7-6)Â jumped out quickly, scoring four times in the first with three coming in on a bases-loaded double by Cole Maltese. Two errors came back to hurt the Wolverines (12-22, 8-5) in the inning, with all four runs coming in unearned. Another error in the second allowed Northern Colorado to add a fifth unearned run and lead 5-0 after two.
The Wolverines scored three times in the fourth, the first when
Jordan Schlehuber -- who hails from Aurora, Colorado -- singled home
Andy Perkins.
Seth Rhineer followed with an RBI base hit before the third run came in when Rhineer got into a run down at first and Schlehuber stole home.
Jensen Park singled home Reyn Sugai in the fourth to give the Bears a 6-3 lead before Andrus later tied it in the sixth on a 3-2 pitch to left-center. It's his team-leading fourth home run of the year.
After a weather delay halted play in the top of the 7th for an hour, Northern Colorado regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-out single from Marco Castilla for what turned out to be the winning run.
The Wolverines threatened in the ninth, with
Zac Fuller and
Palmer Page both reaching on base hits. With two outs and a 3-2 count, Schlehuber hit the ball towards left-center when Dan Reese made a diving play to end the game and preserve the win for Northern Colorado.
Allen Cook (1-2) got the win after 2.2 scoreless innings for UNC while
Kyle Valgardson (1-3) took the loss. Page had three hits for the Wolverines with both he and Schlehuber scoring two runs each. Park led Northern Colorado with three hits.
