OREM, Utah – A six-run fourth put Utah Valley University in a big hole as New Mexico State evened the weekend's WAC series with a 14-5 win on Saturday night at Brent Brown Ballpark.
Craig Brinkerhoff had three hits to lead the Wolverines (14-29, 10-10) while
Kade Andrus homered and
Jake Marvos collected his first career hit, a double.
The Aggies (8-33-1, 5-14-1) had 20 hits on the night with three different players contributing three apiece. Jay Sheeley was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, Joseph Koerper drove in two runs to go along with three hits and Brent Hermanussen had three hits and scored three times.
New Mexico State sent 11 hitters to the plate in the fourth with four different players driving in runs in the inning.
Mark Krueger singled, moved to second on an error to begin the bottom of the fourth, and then came in to score UVU's first run on a Brinkerhoff base hit. That was all UVU could answer with in the frame.
NM State added two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-1. The Aggies led 12-2 and were an out away from ending the game early before
Greyson Bogden doubled home two runs for Utah Valley to extend it.
Riley Barr (3-6) lasted seven innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits, striking out seven.
Jackson Cofer (0-5) was perfect through three innings for Utah Valley before running into trouble in the fourth.
Andrus' home run, six team-leading fifth of the season, came in the sixth inning. The rubber match is set for Sunday at noon MT.
