OREM, Utah -- Palmer Page had three hits and drove in three runs -- including the game-winning RBIs -- and
Kyle Valgardson retired the final 10 batters of the game to help UVU come from behind and defeat New Mexico State, 10-8, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Brent Brown Ballpark on Sunday afternoon. The win clinches the final WAC home series of the year for UVU.
Page's double to right with the bases loaded in the eighth broke an 8-8 tie and capped seven unanswered runs by the Wolverines (15-29, 11-10) to close out the game. Valgardson, who picked up a save in Friday's series opener, got the win and improved to 2-3 on the year after pitching the final four innings.
"That was a great team win. We got contributions from everyone and to win a big game and series coming from behind like that is outstanding," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "Kyle was superb all weekend for us. He came in and shut them down on Friday and was the key in allowing us to chip away today."
Page,
Craig Brinkerhoff, and
Kade Andrus had three hits apiece with
Jordan Schlehuber and
Greyson Bogden collecting two each on a 16-hit afternoon for UVU.
Down 8-3 after the Aggies (8-34-1, 5-15-1) put six on the board in the sixth inning. The Wolverines scored runs in five consecutive innings with two in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth, one in the seventh, and three in the eighth.
The game was tied 2-2 in the fifth when Utah Valley took a brief lead on a a two-out triple to right-center by Brinkerhoff that scored
Greyson Bogden.
In the six-run inning, NM State had six hits, including back-to-back doubles by Derek Umphres and Daniel Kennon, to take an 8-3 lead. UVU responded by scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning on three straight two-out singles by Bogden, Andrus, and
Mark Krueger. All three runs came after a two-out error allowed the inning to continue.
The Wolverines got within a run in the seventh when Schlehuber blooped a single into shallow left to plate
Zac Fuller. The tying run scored in the eighth when Gothberg walked with the bases loaded. Following a pitching change, Page lined the first pitch of his at-bat to right for the game-winning double.
The victory inches UVU closer to earning a berth in the WAC Tournament in Mesa later this month.
The Wolverines will play their final home game, and final in-state game, of the season on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. MT against Utah. They travel to Grand Forks, N.D. for a pivotal three-game weekend series against North Dakota beginning Friday.
