SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Saint Joseph's used a four-run seventh inning in edging Utah Valley University, 6-5, on Sunday in the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament at Schott Stadium.
Â
UVU (3-5) led 4-2 entering the seventh but a bases loaded, two-out triple by Marc Giacalone put the Hawks (3-1) in front. Taylor Boyd singled home another run that would prove to be crucial after the Wolverines scored on a sacrifice-fly from
Mark Krueger in the bottom half of the inning.
Â
Greyson Bogden had two hits, including his second home run of the year, for Utah Valley while
Spencer Gothberg also collected a pair of hits. Boyd finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead the Hawks.
Â
Saint Joseph's threatened to blow the game open early getting five straight hits to open the second inning.
Â
Patrick Wolfe came out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and nobody out in the second with UVU already down 2-0. He got the first two batters he faced to ground into a fielder's choice with the Wolverine defense getting both leading runners at the plate. He then struck out John Brue to strand the bases full and preserve the two-run game.
Â
Wolfe finished with 5.2 innings of work and a career-high eight strikeouts, allowing one run in the seventh inning.
Â
Bogden hit his second home run of the season to lead off the fourth before a two-out error allowed
Mark Krueger to score the tying run.
Â
The Wolverines took the lead in sixth with a sacrifice fly from
Jesse Emery before another two-out error on a ball hit by
Zac Willis again scored Krueger to make it 4-2.
Â
Garrett Bowman (0-1) took the loss for UVU while Tim Brennan (1-0) got the win for Saint Joseph's.
Â
