WOLVERINES HIT ROAD FOR A TRIO OF BIG 12 DUALSOREM, Utah – The Utah Valley University wrestling team will continue Big 12 Conference action this week on the road as they'll head to the Front Range for three duals in three consecutive nights.
The Wolverines will open the trip on Thursday, Feb. 11 in Colorado Springs, Colorado for a 6:30 p.m. contest with Air Force. UVU will then head north to Greeley, Colorado face Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12 before concluding the trip in Laramie, Wyoming on Saturday, Feb. 13 for a 7 p.m. contest at Wyoming.
"It's going to be a tough trip, but it will be good preparation for our guys that make it to nationals," said head coach
Greg Williams. "Both Air Force and Northern Colorado are much improved from last year and Wyoming is always tough, so we are looking forward to the challenges ahead."
Utah Valley will enter the weekend with a 3-7 overall record and a 0-1 conference clip after falling to South Dakota State by a score of 28-13 in its inaugural Big 12 Conference contest last Friday. Three Wolverines registered wins in the outing, as seniors
Chasen Tolbert (125 pounds) and
Jade Rauser (133) each picked up bonus-point victories and sophomore heavyweight
Dustin Dennison recorded a 5-0 shutout.
The 18th-ranked Tolbert leads UVU on the season with a 15-4 record, while the three-time NCAA qualifier Rauser is right behind him at 14-4. Rauser will also enter the weekend having won nine straight bouts by bonus points after pinning SDSU's Brance Simms in the first period last weekend.
ABOUT AIR FORCEThe Falcons will enter Thursday's contest with a 5-5 overall record and a 0-3 Big 12 mark after dropping a 23-16 decision to Stanford last weekend. Air Force has suffered three straight setbacks after also falling to both North Dakota State (23-14) and South Dakota State (23-15) on the road the previous week. AFA's lone other conference defeat was a 22-16 loss to Wyoming in November.
Three-time NCAA qualifier Josh Martinez (133) leads the Falcons with a 19-6 record while junior 197-pounder Parker Hines is right behind him at 18-9.
Thursday will mark the 13th all-time meeting between UVU and the Academy on the mat. The Wolverines hold a 7-5 advantage after defeating AFA by a score of 25-13 in Orem last season.
ABOUT NORTHERN COLORADOUNC will enter Friday's match with a 3-6 record overall and a 0-4 conference ledger. The Bears have dropped two straight dual meets after falling to Wyoming, 37-7, last weekend and, 35-6, at Oregon State two weeks ago. Northern Colorado is winless in conference action with setbacks to Oklahoma (38-8), SDSU (34-3), NDSU (29-13) and Wyoming.
Twentieth-ranked Trent Noon leads the Bears at 197 pounds with a 20-6 record, while Eleazar DeLuca (157) and Timmy Box (149) are respectively 13-4 and 23-11.
Friday will mark the 16th all-time matchup between UVU and UNC. Northern Colorado holds a slight 8-7 series advantage after edging out the Wolverines 20-18 in Orem last season.
ABOUT WYOMING The Cowboys will enter Saturday with a 5-6 season record and a 3-4 Big 12 mark. UW has won two straight and four of its last five after beating conference foes Northern Colorado (37-7) and NDSU (27-13) as well as Boise State (33-6) and Cal Poly (35-2) during the stretch. The Pokes also hold a conference victory over Air Force (22-16) on the year.
Three UW grapplers are currently ranked in the latest InterMat rankings. Bryce Meredith (21-3) leads the way at 141 pounds as he comes in at 15th, while Drew Templeman (15-6) is 16th at 125 and Tanner Harms (16-3) is 19th at heavyweight.
UVU will be looking to secure its second all-time victory over Wyoming on Saturday, as the Cowboys hold a 10-1 series advantage. Utah Valley's lone series win came on Jan. 21, 2006 in Laramie (26-19).
UP NEXT FOR UVUFollowing this weekend's action, the Wolverines will return home to host Grand Canyon in their regular-season finale on Saturday, Feb. 20. The contest will mark Senior Day for Utah Valley, as Tolbert, Rauser,
Ross Taylor (174) and
Derek Thomas (197) will all be honored prior to the first match.
