Game Recap: Baseball |

UVU wins 10-6, takes three of four at Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. – Zac Willis went 4-for-5 with a school-record-tying three doubles and also drove in three runs as Utah Valley University topped Washington State, 10-6, to take three out of four from the Cougars at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Greyson Bogden added three hits and scored three runs for the Wolverines (7-6) while Mark Krueger and Justin Erlandson each added two RBIs.

Utah Valley University jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before the Pac 12 Cougars (4-8) tied the game in the fifth. The Wolverines added single runs in both the sixth and seventh before two in the top of the ninth to give themselves extra insurance.

"It's hard to go on the road and win any series, especially against a good opponent from a great conference like the Pac 12," said UVU head coach Eric Madsen. "We hit a few bumps in the road in the middle innings but did a nice job of competing to the end. It was great to see our guys find a way to win the game and the series."

Logan Hold came on in relief and tossed 3.0 innings, allowing only an unearned run on two hits and got the win to improve to 2-0 and continue his early-season success. Garrett Bowman pitched the final three scoreless innings to earn his first save. Layne Bruner took the loss for Washington State.

UVU got three in the top of the first and three more in the second to take the 6-0 lead. Krueger started the scoring with an RBI single and, with two outs in the first inning, Erlandson doubled down the line in right to give Utah Valley a 3-0 lead.

The Wolverines matched the three-run first with three more in the second. Willis had an RBI double and Krueger a sacrifice fly before Willis came in on a passed ball to give UVU the six-run lead.

Washington State scored twice in the third and three times in the fourth to get within a run. Derek Chapman had a two-run single as part of the three-run inning.

The Cougars tied it in the fifth but Utah Valley responded in the next half-inning when Willis – in the lineup as the designated hitter – delivered his second double, scoring Bogden for the third time in the game.

Trevor Howell had an RBI single in the seventh to give UVU an 8-6 lead. In the ninth, Stone Ramsey had a pinch-hit RBI hit and Willis earned his fourth RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

For Washington State, Chapman drove in three runs and was one of three players with two hits.

Up next for Utah Valley is a rivalry contest at BYU on Tuesday at 6 p.m. MT. The Wolverines then open their home schedule against Portland with a four-game series beginning Thursday at Brent Brown Ballpark.
