SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Valley University outlasted the University of Utah, 12-11, in 10 innings on Tuesday night at Smith's Ballpark to sweep the season series between the in-state rivals.
Paul Estrada hit a go-ahead, two-run triple as part of a four-run 10th and the Wolverines (21-16) held on after the Pac 12-leading Utes (13-20) scored three times in the bottom of the inning. The win not only completes the sweep of Utah but gives Utah Valley a final record of 7-2 this season against Pac 12 schools.
Â
UVU recorded the final two outs of the game on the basepaths; Wade Gulden singled to right to make it a one-run game but slid past second base and was tagged out for the second out. Kody Davis followed with a base hit but was gunned down at second by catcher
Zac Willis after trying to advance to second on a ball in the dirt to end the game.
Â
"That was not a pretty game. It was sloppy but to find a way to win is great. That's a good team that's leading the Pac 12," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "We had some big at-bats when it really mattered and made some big plays there at the end."
Â
Down 5-4 after Kellen Marruffo homered to right for Utah,
Craig Brinkerhoff answered with his fifth home run of the season to the deep part of the ballpark to give Utah Valley a 6-5 lead.
Â
The Wolverines extended the lead in the sixth when Willis tripled to left on a diving attempt by Max Schuman, scoring
Justin Erlandson.
Greyson Bogden then bounced a single up the middle to score Willis and give the Wolverines an 8-5 lead.
Â
Marruffo hit his second double of the game with two on in the sixth, driving in both runners to make it 8-7. In the bottom of the ninth, Josh Rose's two-out single thru the right side scored Chandler Anderson to force the extra frame.
Â
After Estrada's two-run triple, Erlandson singled to right to make it 11-8 before
Trevor Howell flipped a double past third for the fourth run of the inning.
Â
Utah Valley finished with 16 hits with seven different players having two-hit days and every starter collecting at least one hit.
Mark Krueger had a single in his first at-bat to extend his hitting streak to 20 games. Marruffo finished 3-for-5 with the home run, two doubles and four RBIs while also scoring three times.
Â
The Wolverines also defeated Utah on March 30 in Salt Lake City, 7-6, and on April 5 in Orem, 10-4. It's the first time UVU has swept the Utes and the first time either team has recorded a sweep of three games or more since Utah Valley's move to NCAA Division I in 2004.
Â
Utah Valley now faces WAC co-leader Seattle University in a three-game series beginning Friday night at 6 p.m. MT from Brent Brown Ballpark.
