Wolverines edged by UND, 4-3

OREM, Utah – North Dakota scored in the top of the ninth to edge Utah Valley University, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Brent Brown Ballpark, taking two of three from the Wolverines in the WAC series.

With pinch runner Nick Gagnon on second at two down in the top of the ninth, Luis Calvo blooped a single into left center to drive in the winning run for the Fighting Hawks (5-14, 2-4). Unlike Saturday night's nine-run ninth inning, there would be no comeback for the Wolverines (15-14, 3-3), who went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.

"It's certainly disappointing. Great fortune last night put us in a good position to win the series but we just haven't played very well at home," said UVU head coach Eric Madsen. "Give credit to North Dakota. We were outplayed in every aspect of the game. We have to find a way to get ready for Utah on Tuesday and Northern Colorado on the weekend."

North Dakota scored early, breaking through with two in the top of the first. The Wolverines threatened in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with one out, but Ellery Bresnahan robbed Jordan Schlehuber with a diving catch in right center to end the inning and keep UVU off the board.

Schlehuber came up again with a runner in scoring position and two out in the fourth and delivered a single thru the middle to score Spencer Gothberg and make it 2-1. North Dakota took a 3-1 lead with a run in the six on an errant pickoff attempt at first.

In the bottom of the sixth, Justin Erlandson singled, stole second and later scored on a two-out RBI single from Trevor Howell to get UVU back within a run. With two outs in the seventh, Mark Krueger doubled to left and then advanced on consecutive wild pitches to tie the game at 3-3.

Kyle Valgardson (2-1) was tagged with the loss while Bresnahan, who took the loss on Saturday night, picked up the win with 1.2 scoreless innings. For UVU, Jake Mayer pitched 2.2 shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Mayer came out of the bullpen in the sixth with a runner at second and one down and worked out of the jam. He pitched around a leadoff double in the seventh inning, keeping the Wolverines within a run at that point.

Krueger finished 3-for-4 with two doubles for Utah Valley while Reznicek went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. The Wolverines outhit UND 9-7 but stranded 11 runners on base.

"That's the most glaring thing. We had so many opportunities and just couldn't do it,"  Madsen said.

Utah Valley now hosts Utah on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before another home WAC series next weekend against Northern Colorado, beginning Friday, April 8 at 6 p.m.
