OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University clinched the weekend series, erasing an early deficit to defeat CSU Bakersfield, 11-5, on Saturday night at Brent Brown Ballpark.
The Wolverines moved to 24-18 overall and sit in fourth place in the WAC at 10-7 in league play. A pair of four-run innings helped UVU come from behind after the Roadrunners (9-32, 4-12) scored four times in the top of the first.
Danny Beddes (5-3) started and lasted five innings and settled down after the first to allow just one more run on two hits over his final four innings of work.
Logan Hold pitched four scoreless innings to finish the game and pick up his first save. Andrew Hansen (2-7) pitched six innings and allowed six earned runs (eight total) for CSUB and took the loss.
"We've got to get off to a better start but I have to give our guys a lot of credit for coming back and finding a way to answer their first inning," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "We've done a better job of hitting with two outs and finding a way to knock guys in when we have opportunities. Really it's our pitching that has allowed us to win games. Danny bounced back and grinded his way through five innings and Logan came in a threw strikes and really did a nice job."
CSUB's at bat in the first inning included six stolen bases and a rare steal of home by Dustin Frailey. Ryan Grotjohn singled home the first run of the inning before a walk of Drew Seelman loaded the bases. Frailey, Grotjohn, and Seelman each were credited with a stolen base on the steal of home.Nick Vehlewald drove in two runs with a blooper that dropped in down the right field line to make it 4-0 before UVU ever came to bat.
The Wolverines came right back with four in the bottom of the inning.
Mark Krueger and
Craig Brinkerhoff hit back-to-back RBI singles. Krueger scored on a throwing error following Brinkerhoff's hit.
Spencer Gothberg tied the game with a sacrifice fly that plated Brinkerhoff.
UVU's second four-run frame came in the third and started with an RBI double to deep right-center that brought Krueger in for the go-ahead run. With the runners at second and third and the infield in,
Stone Ramsey blooped a single over the head of the defense to score Brinkerhoff. An error and a sacrifice fly added two more in the inning, giving the Wolverines an 8-4 lead.
Grotjohn's second RBI came in the top of the fifth before Utah Valley's third sacrifice fly of the game – by Bogden that plated Willis – made it 9-5. Willis reached third on a triple to left center that nearly left the park.
The Wolverines added two more in the eighth when
Trevor Howell singled to drive in
Paul Estrada. Bogden notched his second RBI of the game – and fifth of the series – on a base hit to left that scored
Jordan Schlehuber.
Bogden, Krueger and Brinkerhoff each had two hits with Bogden and Gothberg both driving in two runs. The Wolverines finished with 12 hits with ever starter collecting at least one.
The series concludes on Sunday at noon, with Utah Valley going for its first series sweep of the conference season.
