Wolverines drop midweek to Cougars

OREM, Utah – BYU used an eight-run seventh inning to pull away from Utah Valley University en route to a 17-6 win on Tuesday night in front of a season-high 4,120 fans at Brent Brown Ballpark.

Eric Urry homered twice for the Cougars (32-13) and drove in five runs while Brennan Lund went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs. BYU scored 12 of its runs over the final three innings. Craig Brinkerhoff homered for the Wolverines (28-20) and Justin Erlandson had three hits and two runs scored.

"Give them (BYU) a lot of credit. They are a very good club. On our end we didn't do a good job of getting the ball where it needed to be, nor did we hit very well with two outs," said UVU head coach Eric Madsen.

BYU jumped out quickly behind a three-run home run from Urry. The Cougars added single runs in the third and fifth to take a 5-0 lead midway through the contest.

The Wolverines got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Trevor Howell, scoring Erlandson. Greyson Bogden later singled home Jordan Schlehuber to make it a 5-2 contest.

Brinkerhoff hit his home run, a towering shot to left center, in the bottom of the sixth. It was his team-high eighth of the season and got Utah Valley within two, 5-3.

In the decisive seventh inning, BYU scored seven of its eight runs after there were two outs. Lund hit a bases-loaded triple to right center and, after a pair of RBI base hits, Urry hit his second home run of the night. Bronson Larson and Colton Shaver also hit home runs for the Cougars, who outhit the Wolverines 19-12.

The win in the rubber match gave BYU the season series after the teams split the two games played in Provo. Utah Valley finished the season 4-2 against in-state opponents, also sweeping three games from Utah.

The Wolverines host the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in a three-game WAC series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. MT.  UVU is tied for third with Sacramento State, two games back of New Mexico State and three of league-leading Seattle University.
