OREM, Utah—
Spencer Gothberg hit a walk-off double to center field to score
Craig Brinkerhoff from second base in the bottom of the 13th inning to give Utah Valley a 3-2 win over UT Rio Grande Valley Saturday night at Brent Brown Ballpark.
Â
With the win, Utah Valley improves to 30-20 overall on the season and remain in third place in the WAC with a 15-8 record. UTRGV falls to 19-26 overall and 8-12 in league play. The 13 innings is the longest game that the Wolverines have played this season.
Â
"There were so many great plays by so many individuals tonight, even little things that go unnoticed," Utah Valley head coach
Eric Madsen said. "Its hard to just really pinpoint certain players because I thought there were so many opportunities for both teams to score but Spencer played a great, hitting a home run, winning it at the end and getting walked every other time."
Â
Gothberg got the Wolverines on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning as the senior first baseman hit a two-out solo bomb over the left field wall to give UVU an early 1-0 lead. Gothberg finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate with the game-winning double, a home run, two RBI and a pair of walks.
Â
The Vaqueros responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Jose Garcia doubled to the gap in right center field with runners on the corners to put Anthony Gomez across the plate. Joseph Collazo then singled to left with bases loaded to score Manny Loredo before UVU's
Craig Brinkerhoff threw out Garcia at the plate from left field. Brinkerhoff's laser to home marked one of his two assists on the night.
Â
Jordan Schlehuber tripled off the left field wall to open the bottom of the sixth.
Zac Willis then hit an RBI single to right center to score Schlehuber from third, tying the game up at 2-2. Â Both teams went scoreless through the next six innings until Gothberg's walk-off in the bottom of the 13th.
Â
Schlehuber went 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored.
Justin Erlandson kept his hitting streak alive at 15 games as he beat the throw on a bunt in the bottom of the 11th inning.
Â
Patrick Wolfe worked 7.1 innings—the longest outing of his career. The junior lefty recorded a pair of strikeouts and gave up only two runs and seven hits while allowing just one extra base hit.
Kyle Valgardson pitched 4.1 innings with two strikeouts. Valgardson allowed only two hits and did not give up a run.
Matt Davidson picked up his second win of the season as he pitched the final inning without giving up a hit.Â
Â
"Our pitching was outstanding," Madsen said. "Patty gave us a great start and Valgardson coming into the game in the middle innings. Marco (Briones) got us a big out and then
Matt Davidson came through and got us out of a terrible situation."
Â
