PULLMAN, Wash. -- Another big inning hurt Utah Valley University as Washington State completed a four-game sweep with a 9-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Wolverines (3-12) surrendered eight runs in the sixth inning, succumbing to a crooked number from the Cougars (10-4) for the third straight day.Â
WSU starter A.J. Block tossed five hitless innings and struck out four while six different pitchers limited UVU to just two hits on the day. The Wolverines trailed 1-0 in the top of the sixth when
Justin Erlandson was hit by a pitch with one out. Two batters later
Jake Berry singled up the middle for Utah Valley's first hit, and run, of the game.Â
In the decisive sixth inning, Washington State sent 12 hitters to the plate and needed just three hits to produce the big inning due to seven walks allowed in the inning by four different Utah Valley pitchers.Â
In the ninth, the Wolverines were able to take advantage of three, two-out walks to load the bases before
Callahan Moltzan drove in
Kade Poulsen and
Luke Jacketta with a pinch-hit single to right.Â
Caleb McAllister (1-0) got the win for WSU while
Paxton Schultz (0-2) took the loss. Schultz lasted into the sixth and struck out five while allowing three runs on five hits.Â
Utah Valley will four games at Creighton in Omaha this coming week. The series begins Friday with a Saturday doubleheader and a single game on Sunday.Â
