OMAHA, Nebraska -- Paul Estrada delivered the game-winning RBI in the top of the 11th inning as Utah Valley University edged Creighton, 2-1, in opener of a four-game series on Friday night at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
Jackson Cofer matched a career high with 7.1 innings pitched, allowing just one run on four hits, and
Logan Hold went the rest of the way with 3.2 innings of hitless relief. Cofer struck out a season-high five while Hold got the win after a career-best six strikeouts, including the side in order in the bottom of the 11th.
"It was a great game, well pitched by both staffs," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "Jackson pitched great, really controlling the game the game, and Logan came in was just what we needed. It was good to see us get some clutch hits too. I was proud of our guys getting the win."
The Wolverines (4-12) used a two-out rally in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
Zac Willis singled with two outs and moved to second when
Jackson Overlund walked.
Nick Simmons then singled home Willis for the 1-0 lead.
Cofer allowed just one hit through three and only three baserunners after five before Clark Brinkman hit a one-out home run in the sixth.
In the 11th,
Callahan Moltzan had a one-out base hit then moved moved to second when
Jake Atkinson grounded out. Estrada then came through with his second hit of the game, on a base hit to center to score Moltzan for the game-winner.
In addition to Estrada, Moltzan and Simmons both had two-hit days as UVU finished with 10 hits as a club. Blue Jays' (1-11) starter Rollie Lacy lasted 6.1 innings, surrendering just the one run on seven hits while striking out eight. David Gerber took the loss for Creighton.
The series continues on Saturday with the teams playing a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. CT/noon MT.
