OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton held off Utah Valley University to win game one of a doubleheader, 3-2, on Saturday at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. It was the second straight one-run game to start the series following UVU's 2-1 win in 11 innings on Friday night.
Â
Wolverine starter
Jake Mayer went the distance, limiting the Blue Jays (2-11) to just four hits for the second straight game. It was the first career complete game for Mayer, who also had a career-high eight strikeouts in taking the tough-luck loss.
Â
Creighton scored one in the second following a leadoff walk, sacrifice bunt and an RBI single from Will Robertson. The Blue Jays (2-11) added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring on a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead and a wild pitch to go ahead 3-0.
Â
Utah Valley (4-13) scored once in the seventh to get on the board and threatened for more but left the bases loaded.
Jake Berry doubled down the line in left to begin the inning and later scored on an RBI single from
Kade Poulsen.
Â
In the eighth,
Callahan Moltzan ended a long at-bat with an RBI single to right to score
Jackson Overlund, who walked with one out in the inning. The Wolverines had two on with one out but Creighton closer David Gerber came in and struck out the next two hitters to end the threat.
Â
Paul Estrada reached to lead off the ninth for UVU after he was hit by a pitch, but was erased on a 6-4-3 double play.
Trevor Howell then reached on an infield single with two out, but Gerber was able to record a strikeout to end it, earning his second save of the season.
Â
Jeff Albrecht (1-2) got the win after allowing one run on four hits and striking out six in 6.2 innings for the Blue Jays. Howell and Berry both had two hits for the Wolverines, who finished with eight in the game. Â
