UVU falls behind early in 8-3 setback to BYU

OREM, Utah—Utah Valley got behind early and couldn't catch up as Brigham Young scored six runs in the first two innings to help the Cougars secure an 8-3 win over the Wolverines on Tuesday evening in the UCCU Crosstown Clash at Brent Brown Ballpark.

With the loss, Utah Valley falls to 11-20 overall on the season, while BYU improves to 18-12. The Wolverines now return to WAC play on Thursday at CSU Bakersfield.

BYU took an early lead in the top of the first inning as a Tanner Chauncey single scored Brennon Anderson. Daniel Schneemann then hit a sacrifice fly to center, sending Chauncey across the plate for the 2-0 lead.

The Cougars then added four more runs in the top of the second as David Clawson sent a three-run homer over the right field wall before Keaton Kringlen singled through the right side to score Anderson to extend the BYU lead to a 6-0 advantage.

After holding BYU scoreless through the next four innings, Utah Valley battled back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Zac Willis hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Trevor Peterson from third base. Jackson Overlund then tripled to the left center gap to send Trevor Howell home. Jake Berry then grounded out to second to help Overlund cross the plate to cut the BYU lead in half at 6-3.

BYU got one back in the top of the seventh inning to go up 7-3 as Bronson Larsen singled to third to score Kringlen who had tripled to right field to open the inning. Kringlen then scored after being walked on a Kyle Dean sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the ninth to extend the BYU lead to 8-3.

The Wolverines used six pitchers on the night with Ondrej Sebek (0-2) taking the loss. Eric Olguin gave up no runs and allowed just one hit with a strikeout in 2.0 innings of work. Marco Briones pitched 2.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts while giving up just one run.

Howell led the Wolverines at the plate with a 4-for-4 effort. The sophomore infielder scored a run in the bottom of the sixth for UVU. Overlund and Callahan Moltzan each went 2-for-4. Overlund scored a run and registered an RBI on the night.

Utah Valley returns to Western Athletic Conference play this week as the Wolverines travel to take on CSU Bakersfield in a three-game series, April 13-15, at Hardt Field. BYU returns to Brent Brown Ballpark for the second game of this year's three-game series on May 2.
