OREM, Utah – Chicago State edged Utah Valley University, 4-3, to salvage the finale of a three-game WAC baseball series on Saturday at Brent Brown Ballpark. Matt Sullivan's solo home run in the top of the eighth served as the game-winner in the night cap of a doubleheader.
Utah Valley won the first game on Saturday in a slugfest, 11-10.
David Modler had three hits and scored twice for the Wolverines (13-24, 6-6) while four other Wolverines had two-hit days including
Trevor Peterson, who doubled and drove in two runs. Sullivan's three hits led the Cougars (9-27, 5-7).
Utah Valley jumped ahead with two in the first. Modler reached on a bunt single on the first pitch he saw, later stole second and then scored when
Trevor Peterson doubled him home. Peterson came around to score the second run, coming all the way from second on a hustle, infield single in the hole towards second by
Zac Willis.
Chicago State tied it in the fifth, getting RBI base hits from Julian Russell and Cody Freund. The Cougars took the lead with a run in the top of the sixth, scoring on a first and third situation when Brandon Eyring took off from first and got in a rundown, allowing Rick Salazar to score and give CSU a 3-2 lead.
Modler doubled to lead off the seventh, moved to third on grounder by
Trevor Howell and then scored when Peterson ripped a 3-2 pitch to center, tying the game at 3-3. The game-tying hit got past the centerfielder and went all the way to the wall, and Peterson attempted to come all the way around to score, but was thrown out at the plate to preserve the tie.
The Wolverines got the tying and potential winning runs on base in the bottom of the ninth but Willis grounded into a fielder's choice to end it.
Paxton Schultz pitched 8.0 innings and allowed four runs and took the loss while Joe Baier threw 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen and picked up the win for the Cougars.
The Wolverines will host Utah on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the second and final game between the teams this season. Next weekend UVU travels to Northern Colorado in WAC play.
