OREM, Utah – The University of Utah used a huge offensive output in a lopsided 23-5 win over Utah Valley University on Tuesday night at Brent Brown Ballpark. The win for the Utes (18-17) earns a season split of the two-game series between the in-state foes. It also snaps Utah Valley's (13-25) four-game winning streak in the series. The Wolverines won the earlier matchup between the teams in Salt Lake City, 9-7, on March 22.
DaShawn Keirsey Jr. went 5-for-7 with four RBIs and four runs scored for Utah while both Dallas Carroll and Hunter Simmons had five runs batted in. The Utes finished with 22 hits as a team.
Utah Valley got a pair of two-run home runs, from
Jake Berry and
Jake Atkinson, and were within three runs, 8-5, in the second, but Utah scored at least one run in every inning but the fifth including seven in the top of the first.
The Utes manufactured a pair of runs right out of the gate on sacrifice flies from Carroll and Simmons. Keirsey Jr, who singled and stole second, and Oliver Dunn, who doubled, both scored. After Wade Gulden was hit by a pitch, Zack Moeller doubled him home to give Utah an early 3-0 lead. The two-out rally continued when Dominic Foscalina singled home two more runs, an error allowed another run to score, and Keirsey Jr had his second hit of the inning to drive in Ellis Kelly to cap the seven-run inning.
The Wolverines got two in the bottom of the first following a leadoff walk to
David Modler and Berry's second home run of the season.
After Simmons homered in the top of the second to make it 8-2, Utah Valley got another two-run home run in the bottom of the inning.
Kade Poulsen singled to lead off the inning and Atkinson hit a no-doubter to left to make the score 8-4. The Wolverines added another run in the second, getting a two-out RBI single from Peterson that scored
Paul Estrada.
Utah would add two more in the third and another in the fourth to break the game open and lead 14-5, and continued to add on with three in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Peterson had three hits for Utah Valley including a double and his second-inning RBI while
Jackson Overlund had a pair of hits. Foscalina and Simmons each had three hits for the Utes with Ellis Kelly driving in three runs. Foscalina also scored four runs.
Nexy up, the Wolverines travel to Northern Colorado for a three-game WAC series beginning Friday. UVU returns home next Tuesday to host BYU at 6 p.m. MT.
