GREELEY, Colo. – Utah Valley University completed it's halted game that began on Friday, completing a 6-1 win over Northern Colorado in the WAC series opener on a cold and wet afternoon at Jackson Field. The teams will attempt to play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 10:30 a.m. MT to finish up the series.
The game was halted due to weather in the top of the eighth inning with the Wolverines (14-25, 7-6) ahead 6-0 after a five-run fifth inning and 6.1 innings of one hit, shutout baseball by
Jackson Cofer. He struck out seven and retired the side in order in the first, third and fifth and left with one out in the seventh and picked up the win.
David Modler finished 4-for-5 with two doubles for UVU while
Trevor Peterson and
Jake Berry both drove in two runs.
In UVU's five-run fifth,
Callahan Moltzan and
Jake Atkinson both singled to lead off the fifth and two batters later Modler singled to load the bases.
Trevor Howell drove in a run on a fielder's choice to get UVU on the board and
Peterson followed with a two-run single to plate Howell and
Paul Estrada.
Following a weather delay, with two outs in the inning,
Jackson Overlund walked before
Jake Berry delivered a two-out base hit that scored two more and capped the five-run inning.
Skyler Davis tripled and scored in the sixth to give the Wolverines a 6-0 lead.
In the seventh, Northern Colorado (15-23, 4-9) threatened, getting the first two hitters against
Logan Hold on base. Hold got out of it though, with back-to-back strikeouts to strand both runners and keep the Bears off the board.
The Bears scored their run in the bottom of the eighth and got the leadoff man aboard to start the ninth, but Hold retired the next three hitters to secure the win.
UVU finished with 13 hits including two from Atkinson. Northern Colorado had just five hits, two coming from Alex Kiel.
