GREELEY, Colo. – Utah Valley University scored five runs in the top of the eighth to take the rubber match of a three-game WAC series, 9-5, at Northern Colorado on Sunday. The win came in game two of a doubleheader, with the Bears winning game one, 7-0, to even the series.
 
Jake Berry went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Patrick Wolfe picked up his 10th save to set a new single-season school record, breaking the old mark of nine set by Kyle Valgardson in 2016. Wolfe came on with a runner on first and nobody out in the eighth and got a double play and a strikeout. After Berry added an insurance run with a two-out RBI single, Wolfe retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win and the save.
 
Trailing 5-3 in the eighth, the Wolverines (15-26, 8-7) got a huge break on a two-out throwing error on a strikeout. Berry started the scoring with a two-out, RBI single and, after a wild pitch put runners at second and third, the pivotal defensive mishap allowed Jackson Overlund to score from third. Skyler Davis struck out on a ball in the dirt but catcher Alex Kiel's throw sailed high and allowed Davis to reach.
 
Kade Poulsen then walked to load the bases and Callahan Moltzan was hit by a pitch to force in Berry for the go-ahead run. Another error, this time at second, gave the Wolverines two more runs on a David Modler grounder, completing the run-scoring and giving UVU an 8-5 lead.
 
The Bears (16-24, 5-10) scored three times in the bottom of the first inning on RBIs hits with Evan Johnson and Cole Maltese both driving in runs for Northern Colorado.
 
The Wolverines scored twice in the fourth to get within a run. A throwing error following a Zac Willis bunt single allowed Trevor Peterson to score from second before Berry drove in Jackson Overlund with a sacrifice fly.
 
Jack Pauley got one of those runs back for the Bears in the fifth, doubling home Corey Nakakura with two outs to give Northern Colorado a 4-2 advantage.
 
Berry drove in his second run in the sixth with a two-out single to into left, driving home Peterson, who led off the inning with a base hit and finished 3-for-4. 
 
Eric Olguin (2-2) picked up the win after tossing two-thirds of an inning. Anthony Brady was tagged with the loss with four of the five runs charged to his ledger coming in unearned.
 
In Sunday's first game, the Bears scored twice in the second and five more in the fifth to pull away from the Wolverines.
 
UVU had all six of its hits early on, and couldn't cash in with runners in scoring position, stranding two runners on base in three different innings and left nine on base in the game.
 
Aaron Hamilton (3-4) pitched seven shutout innings of six-hit baseball, striking out six. Dylan Shiraki tossed two perfect innings to finish of the game.
