OREM, Utah – Jake Mayer tossed a three-hit shutout as Utah Valley University took game two of a doubleheader, 5-0, over Incarnate Word on Friday night at Brent Brown Ballpark. The Wolverines (10-19) dropped game one to the Cardinals (15-17), 6-4.
Â
Mayer struck out seven and walked just one and sat down the first eight he faced to start the outing before issuing a two-out walk in the third. He retired the side in order in five different innings, including the eighth and ninth on only 15 pitches over the final two frames, while retiring the last nine hitters of the game.
Â
"He (Mayer) just went out a really competed, got right after it and made pitches when he needed to. You could tell that was a guy that was trying to win. Everybody has a job and he was locked in doing his," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen.
Â
Incarnate Word's three hits, all singles, came to lead off the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. In the fourth and with a runner at second and one out, Mayer struck out the next two hitters to end the inning. It was the only base runner that the Cardinals had reach scoring position all night.
Â
In the sixth, Mayer erased the leadoff hit on a 6-4-3 double play, and in the seventh, got a fly out and a pair of strikeout to strand the runner at first.
Â
"I just kind of threw the ball where it needed to go and that's kind of how it went. The defense was great today," said Mayer. "I've never been a guy that's tried to overpower people and there's nothing better than having the defense play the way it did today."
Â
Jake Berry hit his first career home run and had two hits and a pair of RBIs while
David Modler also had two hits and two batted in.
Zac Willis, who had three hits in game one on Friday, came back with two hits in the win, with
Jackson Overlund and
Paul Estrada also having two-hit games.Â
Berry's home run came to lead off the second and broke a scoreless tie. Later in the inning, after
Kade Poulsen was hit by a pitch, Modler doubled to give Utah Valley a 2-0 lead. Berry gave the Wolverines a 3-0 advantage with an RBI single in the fourth, driving home Overlund. Utah Valley added single runs in the sixth, on an RBI base hit from
Callahan Moltzan, and the eighth and a Modler single.
Â
For Mayer, it was his first career complete game and shutout, and the team's first individual shutout since
Danny Beddes blanked Sacramento State on April 19, 2014. UVU had a combined shutout in last year's WAC Tournament championship game.
Â
The teams will close out the series with Saturday's contest scheduled for 1 p.m. MT, moved up due to impending weather.
