Wolverines hold off UIW to win series

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University scored eight times in the fourth inning en route to an 11-8 win over Incarnate Word on Saturday to take two of three in the non-conference series. Jackson Overlund had a pair of doubles and drove in four runs for the Wolverines (11-19).

UVU led 10-1 after the eight-run inning, but had to hold off the Cardinals (15-18) after they scored five in the fifth and then two more in the ninth. UIW got the tying run to the plate before Patrick Wolfe came on and got Eddy Gonzalez to ground out to David Modler at second to end it and pick up his seventh save. Marco Briones tossed 3.2 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win in his first decision of the season.

"It's good to find a way to win. We can play better and need to be more consistent if we're going to have success," said UVU head coach Eric Madsen. "I was happy with the way the guys hit the ball in the fourth and Marco came in a did a nice job slowing their momentum."

The Wolverines jumped ahead with two runs in the first on three consecutive hits. Trevor Howell and Zac Willis had back-to-back singles and both scored when Overlund doubled them home.

Garrett Terrell got the Cardinals on the board in the second, with an RBI double that plated Lee Thomas.

In the fourth, the Wolverines sent 11 hitters to the plate and had six different players get hits including the second two-run double from Overlund, who now has 15 doubles on the season. Eight straight hitters reached base with one out while Willis and Jake Atkinson also had RBI base hits in the frame.

Incarnate Word got five of those runs back in the fifth, getting five straight singles to start the inning and seven base hits total to make it a 10-6 contest.

Trevor Peterson hit his second home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth with one out, to give Utah Valley an 11-6 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Thomas hit a two-run home run to get the Cardinals within three. A two-out walk and a base hit brought the potential tying run to the plate when Wolfe was summoned from the bullpen and got the final out.

Howell and Willis both joined Overlund with two-hit days while Thomas and David Anaya both had three hits for Incarnate Word. Every starter in both lineups had at least one hit in the game.

Utah Valley closes out the current homestand with a midweek game against in-state foe BYU on Tuesday at 6 p.m. MT in the first of three games this season against the Cougars in the UCCU Crosstown Clash. The Wolverines will return to conference play next Thursday in a three-game series at CSU Bakersfield.
