BELLEVUE, Wash. – Jake Berry homered in the top of the 10th as Utah Valley University evened its series at Seattle University with a 3-2, extra-inning win on Friday night Bannerwood Park. The win also assures UVU of the No. 4 seed in next week's WAC Tournament in Mesa.
Jake Mayer pitched seven strong innings while
Marco Briones and
Patrick Wolfe kept the Redhawks (19-32-1, 8-15) off the board over the final three innings. Wolfe came on with the potential winning run at first and two outs in the ninth and struck out Aaron Stroosma to send the game to the 10th. Wolfe (2-2) retired the side in order in the bottom of the 10th, striking out the last two hitters to get the win.
"Jake (Mayer) was great, he really took control after that first inning. I called the wrong pitch and if I don't do that then maybe he pitches a shutout," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "All three pitchers came in and did their job and for Jake (Berry) to get that hit in that situation is big for him and for us."
The Redhawks got a two-run home run in the first from Sean Sutton to jump ahead. Griffin Andreychuck singled after there were two outs and nobody on before Sutton's third home run of the season made it 2-0 after an inning.
After the first Mayer settled in, scattering four base hits over his final six innings of work. He finished with seven innings, allowing just the two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking two.
The Wolverines tied it in the third, using their own two-out rally before a two-run single from
Zac Willis.
Trevor Peterson and
Trevor Howell singled on back-to-back pitches before
Callahan Moltzan walked to load the bases. Willis then lifted a 1-2 pitch into right-center, scoring both Peterson and Howell.
Both teams missed opportunities to score throughout the game, combining to go 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Seattle U finished 0-for-7 with RISP.
Connor Moore tossed 6.2 innings, surrendering two runs on eight hits while striking out seven and walking a pair. Austin Hansen (0-4) took the loss for the Redhawks after giving up Berry's home run. Berry's home run, a no-doubter to left, came of the first pitch he saw in the at-bat.
Trevor Howell had three hits for Utah Valley while
Callahan Moltzan and Willis each added two. Sutton had two hits to lead Seattle U.
The series concludes on Saturday at noon PT/1 p.m. MT at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, Washington.
