OREM, Utah – Jonathan Groff tossed a three-hit shutout as New Mexico State completed a series sweep, 6-0, at Utah Valley University on Sunday afternoon at Brent Brown Ballpark.
Groff retired the final 14 hitters he faced and 23 of the last 24 overall, striking out seven without allowing a walk. The Aggies (30-19, 14-4) also showed their power for the third straight day, with three different players hitting home runs. NM State hit 10 home runs during the series. Dan Hetzel homered for the third straight game and also tripled and doubled, finishing just a single shy of the cycle. He finished with three RBIs and scored twice.
Justin Erlandson had two of the Wolverines' (15-30, 8-10) three hits with
Jackson Overlund adding the other. Erlandson also had a stolen base.
Patrick Wolfe pitched two scoreless innings in relief to keep his scoreless streak in WAC play alive. Wolfe has made eight appearances in league games and hasn't allowed a run in 12.0 innings.
Hetzel gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead in the third, with his third home run of the series and 12th of the season. New Mexico State extended it to 5-0 in the fifth, getting a solo home run from LJ Hatch. Austin Botello singled and scored when Hetzel tripled before Marcus Still's infield single allowed Hetzel to come in from third. Botello led off the seventh with an opposite field home run to left, giving NM State a 6-0 lead.
Paxton Schultz (1-4) took the loss for the Wolverines, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out six in five innings of work. Groff threw exactly 100 pitches, and had a stretch during the sixth and seventh where he retired the side in order on just 10 pitches, five in each inning.
Up next for Utah Valley will be WAC leading Grand Canyon in a three-game series starting Friday at 6 p.m. It's the final home series of the season for the Wolverines.
