OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley University wrestling team will open dual action this weekend when it heads to upstate New York for the Journeymen Northeast Duals on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Hudson Valley CC in Troy, New York. The Wolverines will also compete at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic on Sunday, Nov. 11.
It will be a busy opening day of dual action for the Wolverines, as they'll face off against No. 12 Nebraska, No. 15 Rutgers and Niagara County CC. UVU will open the dual tournament against the 12th-ranked Nebraska Huskers of the Big Ten at 8 a.m. MT/10 a.m. ET. The Wolverines will then face Niagara County CC at 10 a.m. MT/noon ET, before closing the day against the 15th-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights of the Big Ten at noon MT/2 p.m. ET. The Journeymen Collegiate Classic will then run all day on Sunday and action will begin at 7 a.m. MT/9 a.m. ET at Hudson Valley CC.
Both Saturday's Journeymen Duals and Sunday's Journeymen Collegiate Classic will be streamed live on FloWrestling.org (for a fee).
UVU will enter Saturday's duals currently receiving votes for the NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, as it received a total of five votes on this weeks poll. The Wolverines will enter the season off of a strong 2017-18 campaign in which they went 8-6 overall and tied for fifth in the Big 12 Conference standings with a 4-4 league record. UVU also sent a program-high five grapplers to the NCAA Championships a season ago.
Of those five national qualifiers, the Wolverines welcome four of them back this season in sophomore 133-pound
Taylor LaMont, junior 165-pounder
Demetrius Romero, junior 174-pounder
Kimball Bastian and two-time NCAA qualifier
Tanner Orndorff (197 pounds). Romero, Bastian, Orndorff as well as redshirt freshman heavyweight
Tate Orndorff will all enter the season nationally ranked in their respective weight classes, while LaMont is slated to miss the 2018-19 season with an injury.
Romero, who went 26-9 last season, is currently ranked 14th by TrackWrestling at 165, while Bastian (20-11 in 2017-18) is also ranked 14th by InterMat at 174. Brothers
Tanner Orndorff (21-15 in 2017-18) and
Tate Orndorff (redshirted in 2017-18) will enter ranked 18th by TrackWrestling at 197 and 16th by FloWrestling at heavyweight, respectively.
A week ago, UVU's backups and redshirts opened the season by earning six podium finishes at the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyoming. In the elite division, sophomore heavyweight
Benjamin Andrew led the way by taking second, while sophomore
Koy Wilkinson took third at 165 and redshirt freshman
Jakob Discher fourth at 165. In the amateur division, unattached freshmen
Cameron Haddock and
Jayden Woodruff led the way by winning titles at 149 and 197, respectively, while fellow unattached freshman
Chase Trussell placed second at heavyweight.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
Nebraska (0-0, 0-0 Big Ten) will enter the Journeymen Duals off of a strong outing in which 18 Huskers placed at the Daktronics Open in Brookings, South Dakota, last weekend. Nebraska wrestled its way to a 10-4 record a season ago and a 7-2 finish in Big Ten action. The Huskers welcome back five NCAA qualifiers and three All-Americans from last year's squad that finished fifth at the Big Ten Championships and ninth at the NCAA Championships. Returning All-Americans include No. 6 Chad Red Jr. at 141, No. 3 Tyler Berger at 157 and No. 3 Taylor Venz at 184. The Huskers also welcome in two-time All-American and current sixth-ranked Zeke Moisey, who recently transferred from West Virginia, at 125 pounds.
Saturday's dual against Nebraska will mark the third all-time meeting between the Wolverines and the Huskers. Nebraska holds a 2-0 series advantage after beating UVU in both 2013 (36-6) and 2011 (22-12).
Niagara County CC is s two-year junior college from Sanborn, New York. The Thunderwolves are off to a 1-2 record in 2018-19 with a win over Joliet and a pair of tightly contested setbacks to Muskegon and Mercyhurst North East.
Saturday's match against NCCC will mark the first all-time meeting between the Wolverines and the Thunderwolves.
Rutgers (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) will enter the weekend with a trio of dual victories on the season after going a perfect 3-0 at the Rutgers Quad Meet last weekend at home. The 15th-ranked Scarlet Knights recorded a 30-6 win over Big 12 foe Fresno State, a 38-5 victory over Johnson & Wales, and a 48-3 win over Centenary University (N.J.). Rutgers posted an 8-7 overall record in 2017-18 and a 3-6 dual clip in Big Ten action. The Scarlet Knights welcome back six grapplers with NCAA Championship experience this season, which includes a pair of All-Americans in 2018 national finalist and third-ranked Nick Suriano (133) and No. 2 Anthony Ashnault (149). Rutgers finished 11th at both the NCAA Championships and the Big Ten Championships a season ago.
Saturday's dual meet will mark just the second all-time meeting between the Wolverines and Scarlet Knights. Rutgers holds a 1-0 series lead after defeating UVU, 30-9, on Nov. 21, 2015 in Corvallis, Oregon.
The Journeymen Collegiate Classic will then take place on Sunday. UVU will face off against grapplers from No. 6 Lehigh, No. 8 NC State, No. 12 Nebraska, No. 17 Purdue, No. 20 Lock Haven, Appalachian State, Army, Bloomsberg, Drexel, Edinboro, Hofstra, Oklahoma, Sacred Heart, Virginia, West Virginia and The Citadel.
UP NEXT FOR UVU
Following Sunday's Journeymen Collegiate Classic, the Wolverines will head to the Midwest for the NIU Huskie Duals on Saturday, Nov. 17 in DeKalb, Illinois. There, UVU will face Northern Illinois, Clarion and Harper College. The next day, Nov. 18, Utah Valley will head to Madison, Wisconsin, to take on No. 18 Wisconsin.
