SALT LAKE CITY – After taking an early lead, Utah Valley University fell to in-state foe Utah on Tuesday night, 10-6, at Smith's Ballpark.
Jackson Overlund homered for the Wolverines (12-19) while
Trevor Peterson,
Kade Poulsen and
Skyler Davis both had two-hit nights. Davis finished 2-for-2 with an RBI after coming off the bench.
Chandler Anderson and DaShawn Keirsey Jr. had big nights for the Utes (9-22), driving in three runs apiece while Anderson finished 4-for-5 and scored three times and Keirsey Jr. was 3-for-5.
Overlund got Utah Valley on the board in the first, blasting his fifth home run of the season with
Trevor Howell aboard on a 3-2 count with two down in the inning. The Wolverines added a run in the second on a wild pitch to take a 3-0 lead.
The Utes got two in the third to get within a run, scoring on a bases-loaded walk and an errant throw back to the pitcher.
Peterson got one of those runs back in the fourth after
Paul Estrada singled to lead off, stole second and came in to score on a two-out base hit by Peterson.
Utah tied it in the bottom of the inning though, on an RBI double from Anderson and an RBI single from Keirsey Jr.
The Utes took the lead for good in the fifth inning, scoring four times to go in front, 8-4. The inning started with back-to-balk walks and a hit batter to load the bases with nobody out. Anderson then brought home two with a base hit, giving Utah its first lead of the game. After a walk and a strikeout, Keirsey Jr. delivered again doubling home two runs on a sharply-struck ball that was knocked down at second by
David Modler. Keirsey Jr. got a hustle double and ended up at third after Wade Gulden attempted to score all the way from first but was cut down at the plate.
The Wolverines cut the deficit in half in the seventh. Peterson and Poulsen were both on with two outs after both singled earlier in the inning. Davis drove home Peterson with a base hit to right-center and
Ryan Eastburn plated Poulsen on a pinch-hit, infield single to third.
The Utes rallied after there were two outs and nobody on in the eighth to add two insurance runs for the final 10-6 tally. The teams will meet again next Tuesday at 6 p.m. at UCCU Ballpark in the second and final game between the two.
This weekend, Utah Valley returns to WAC play with a three-game series at home versus CSU Bakersfield starting Friday night at 6 p.m. MT.
