OREM, Utah – CSU Bakersfield won the opener of a three-game WAC series, and the first game of a Saturday doubleheader, 6-2 over Utah Valley University at UCCU Ballpark. Game two of the twin bill will start at 5:45 p.m. MT.
The Runners scored twice in the second, getting a solo home run from Luis Martinez to lead off the inning and an RBI double with two outs by Daniel Carrizosa.
The Wolverines took advantage of four walks in the bottom half of the inning, with four players walking, including
Trevor Howell with the bases loaded to force in
Michael Beltran.
A throwing error allowed UVU to tie the game in the fourth. Howell reached on an infield single and a ball that got away allowed
Paul Estrada to score all the way from first.
CSU Bakersfield regained the lead on an RBI double from Sergio Robles in the sixth and extended it with a three-run seventh. Jassen Oliver singled home two runs and Robles added an RBI single in the frame.
Alec Daily (3-1) got the win after lasting five innings and striking out five. He allowed one earned run (two total) on three hits and worked around seven walks. Ben Cutting pitched four scoreless innings to pick up his first save.
Paxton Schultz (1-4) took the loss for the Wolverines while Estrada had two of UVU's five hits in the game. Robles finished 4-for-5 and Oliver 3-for-5 for the Runners with both driving in two runs apiece.
