OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley University baseball team put together two runs in the third, seventh and ninth innings, but big seventh and ninth innings from Air Force did the Wolverines in as they fell 12-6 on Monday night at UCCU Ballpark.
Despite outhitting the Falcons 13-12, Utah Valley fell to 11-15 overall for the season. Three errors by the Wolverines proved to be costly while Air Force only committed one.
Ryan Eastburn went 3-for-5 with a double and five RBI's while
Paxton Schultz gave UVU a quality start and struck out seven batters in the losing effort.
Air Force opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but the Wolverines quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning.
Trevor Howell advanced all the way to third after reaching on a throwing error and
Jackson Overlund stole second after earning a walk. Eastburn then singled up the middle to score the pair of runners and even the game at two apiece.
Utah Valley's lead was short lived as the Falcons promptly placed a runner on third in the top of the fifth and then traded a double play for a run. Two innings later, a leadoff solo home run gave Air Force a 4-2 lead. The inning was just getting started though as the Falcons scored runs on a wild pitch, RBI single and stealing home.
The Wolverines got two runs back in the seventh as Overlund sent a sacrifice fly to right field to score Howell and Eastburn doubled down the left-field line to send
Trevor Peterson home. The Falcons responded with five insurance runs in the top of the ninth on three home runs. Utah Valley manufactured two runs in the bottom of the ninth in an effort to put together a late rally, but that's all it could produce.
UVU and Air Force will cap off the series on Tuesday, April 3. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. MST and can be seen on the WAC Digital Network. The Wolverines will then travel to Phoenix where they will face Grand Canyon in a three-game WAC series.
