Gaels hold off Wolverines, 4-2, to take series

MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's scored four times in the second inning and held off Utah Valley University, 4-2, to clinch the four-game series. The Gaels (25-18) won three of four from the Wolverines (14-27) as the two teams met in non-conference action at Louis Guisto Field.

Trevor Peterson hit a solo home run for the Wolverines in a two-run fifth, but UVU wouldn't score again.

The Gaels (25-18) loaded the bases with nobody out in the second, getting three straight singles to begin the inning. A sacrifice fly by Joe Vranesh brought home the first run for Saint Mary's. Gio Diaz, Joey Fiske and Brett Rasso each had RBI singles in the inning for the Gaels.

Peterson's home run, his fourth of the season, led off the fifth. Trevor Howell followed him with a double past third and later stood at third with two down when Ryan Eastburn drove him in with a base hit on a 3-2 pitch.

The Wolverines were kept of the base paths the rest of the way, with starter Nick Frank and reliever Ty Madrigal retiring the last 13 hitters of the game. Frank (4-4) lasted six innings and surrendered two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts, while Madrigal got his second save of the season – and series – with three perfect innings. Madrigal also struck out four.

Kaden Schmitt (3-4) tossed five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts and took the loss. Ondrej Sebek threw three scoreless innings for UVU, allowing just one hit and one walk while also adding a strikeout.

Utah Valley has a quick turnaround with a home game on Monday at 6 p.m. at UCCU Ballpark against Pac 12 Arizona. Freshman right-hander Drew Hill is set to make his first start in Monday's contest. The Wolverines travel to New Mexico State for a three-game WAC series in Las Cruces beginning Friday.
