OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley University baseball team fell behind 0-4 through three innings and was unable to recover as it fell to Seattle U, 4-1, in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at UCCU Ballpark.
The UVU bats could only produce four hits on the day, two of which came from leadoff man,
Trevor Peterson.
David Modler and
Paul Estrada both singled for Utah Valley as well.
Jake Mayer recorded the loss for the Wolverines after allowing two earned runs through seven innings. Mayer struck out five batters and walked one as his record fell to 2-8 for the year.
The Redhawks quickly built a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the Wolverines committed two errors. Innings two and three brought a run apiece as Seattle went up 4-0.
Seattle's Tarik Skubal earned the win to improve to 7-1 as he struck out 10 while allowing just one earned run.
Utah Valley claimed one run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Modler scored from third as a runner on first was caught stealing. That proved to be the only run the Wolverines could manufacture for the game. UVU put two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth but could not bring in any runners to score.
The Redhawks and Wolverines will play game two of the doubleheader at 5:20 p.m. MST. UVU will honor its seniors prior to opening pitch. The series will then close on Sunday afternoon at 11:00 a.m. MST at UCCU Ballpark.
