SACRAMENTO, Calif. – After falling behind by four runs early on, the Utah Valley University baseball team stormed back to tie the ballgame but could not hold on as Sacramento State regained its lead and won 10-4 on Friday night at John Smith Field.
 
The loss dropped the Wolverines to 15-36 for the year and 6-17 in conference play.
 
Jake Mayer went 5.2 innings and surrendered five earned runs for UVU while earning the loss. Ryan Eastburn and Trevor Howell led Utah Valley from the plate with two hits apiece. Two errors proved costly for the Wolverines.
 
The Hornets got to work fast as they built a 3-0 lead in the first inning and sent a solo homerun over the left-center wall to go up 4-0 through two innings.
 
Utah Valley then got on the board in the top of the third as Eastburn doubled to right field to score both Trevor Peterson and Michael Beltran. Beltran touched home again in the fourth with a solo shot to left field, and Jackson Overlund tied the game with a sacrifice fly to score Howell in the fifth.
 
The tied game would not last long as Sac State responded with four runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh. That would prove to be enough as UVU could not manufacture any more runs.
 
The year will come to a close for Utah Valley as it wraps up the series and its season on Saturday. Opening pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. MST with live video available via the WAC Digital Network.
