LARAMIE, Wyo. – With Utah Valley University's returning national qualifiers all sitting out the opening tournament, two unattached Wolverines led the way for UVU at Saturday's season-opening action by posting podium finishes at the Cowboy Open at Wyoming's War Memorial Fieldhouse in Laramie.
 
Unattached freshman Corbin Smith highlighted the group by winning a 165-pound Amateur Division title, while fellow unattached freshman RJ Bingham placed fourth in the Amateur Division at 165 pounds. 
 
Smith went a perfect 4-0 on the day en route to winning the 165-pound title while Bingham posted a strong 5-2 outing on his way to earning the fourth-place finish. 
 
In the Elite Division, sophomore 133-pounder Isaiah Delgado led the way by reaching the consolation semifinals and compiling a 4-2 record at the opening-season event. Of his four victories, three of the four were by bonus points. 
 
Redshirt freshman Jerry Rubio (149 pounds) and junior Koy Wilkinson (165) were next by each compiling 3-2 records in the Elite Division, while redshirt freshman Josh Tolentino (149) and sophomore Spencer Heywood (157) each went 2-2, redshirt freshman Josiah Nava (125) went 1-2, and fellow redshirt freshman Jayden Woodruff (197) finished with a 1-1 record after having to withdraw from the tournament due to injury. 
 
In the Amateur Division, unattached freshman Payson Anderton (285) had a strong showing by finishing with a 4-2 record which included a trio of bonus-point wins on the day. Freshman Brigg Hoopes (149), and unattached freshmen Sam Edelblute (133) and James Emmer (141) also all had decent outings by posting 3-2 records, while unattached freshmen Kekana Fouret (157) and Derek Fisher (141) finished with 2-2 and 1-2 respective outings. 
 
A total of 19 Wolverines took part in Saturday's opening-season event.
 
Utah Valley will begin dual action on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Journeymen/Defense Soap Northeast Duals in Troy, New York. There, the Wolverines will first face Sacred Heart before closing the day against Purdue of the Big Ten Conference. UVU enters the season currently receiving votes for the NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll and ranked 23rd on the InterMat Tournament Rankings. Utah Valley will then close the trip by taking part in the Journeymen/Defense Soap Collegiate Classic on Sunday, Nov. 10.
