OREM, Utah – Utah Valley managed to drive home five in the seventh and a run in the eighth to tie it and force extra innings, but BYU responded with a run in the 10th to earn a wild 14-13 victory over the Wolverines in a UCCU Crosstown Clash on Tuesday night at UCCU Ballpark.
UVU (3-17) trailed 9-2 early and again 13-7 late, but the Wolverines rallied late to tie it and force extras. After Utah Valley failed to drive home the potential winning run from third in the last of the ninth, the Cougars (14-5) then managed to pick up what proved to be the winning run on a two-out RBI single from Jaren Hall in the top of the 10th to go on to pull out the wild rivalry contest and sweep the two-game season series.
"I was really proud of our guys for battling back. We had a couple of games get away from us over the weekend, but tonight our guys did a nice job of fighting back in this ballgame," head UVU coach
Eric Madsen said. "We had some opportunities that we needed to take advantage of on both sides, but overall I was proud of our team for the way that they competed."
Alexander Marco answered a two-run home run in the top of the first from BYU's Brock Hale with one of his own in the bottom of the inning. Marco delivered a two-out, two-strike home run -- his fourth -- down the left-field line to score
Kody Hall, who had reached on a leadoff single.
The Cougars then struck back with two in the second and five in the third to take a 9-2 advantage. Hale delivered a two-run single in the second, while Brian Hsu drove home two in the third and Bryan Call capped the spurt with a three-run homer down the rightfield line.
The Wolverines then answered with four runs in the last of the third to make it a 9-6 contest. Following a leadoff walk from
Jake Berry, Hall started the scoring in the frame with an RBI single to left-center to make it 9-3. UVU later loaded the bases with nobody out and Marco delivered a two-run double to left-center and
Drew Sims followed with a sacrifice fly to right to make it a three-run game.
BYU then countered with a run in the fourth to make it 10-6. It stayed 10-6 until the bottom of the sixth when the Wolverines managed to pick up an unearned run to make it 10-7. After loading the bases with two away in the inning, Marco then hit a groundball to second that BYU's Call made a throwing error on to bring in Berry from third and pull the deficit to 10-7.
After Brigham Young tacked on three more runs in the seventh to extend its lead to 13-7, the Wolverines then responded with a five spot in the bottom of the frame to make it a one-run game at 13-12. UVU loaded the bases with nobody out and
Pacen Hayes plated the first two of the big inning with a two-run single through the left side to make it 13-9. After Berry was hit by a pitch,
Kade Poulsen then came home on a fielder's choice. With the bases again loaded and two away,
Michael Beltran delivered another key hit in the inning with a two-run single to center to make it a one run game.
With runners on the corners and one out in a 13-12 game in the bottom of the eighth,
Mick Madsen reached base and later advanced to third on a single from Poulsen followed by a Cougar throwing error. Madsen then came in to score the tying run on a wild pitch to deadlock the score at 13-13.
Tied at 13-all in the last of the ninth, Beltran led off the frame for UVU by reaching on an error and Sims was later issued an intentional walk. Both runners then advanced into scoring position and BYU reliver Mitch McIntyre came on to strike out Utah Valley pinch-hitter
Ryan Eastburn for the second out. After Brigham Young then intentionally walked Poulsen to load the bases, McIntyre managed to strikeout Hayes on a on a pay-off pitch to escape the jam and send the game to extras.
BYU reliever McIntyre was credited with the win after striking out four and not allowing a run over the final inning and two-thirds to improve to 2-0 on the year. UVU's
Jesse Schmit (2-2) suffered the loss for UVU after giving up one run on one hit while fanning three over 2.0 innings of work.
Hall led the Wolverines at the plate in the game by going 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Marco also had a nice outing by going 2-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored. Call paced BYU offensively with a 2-for-5 outing with five RBIs and a run scored, while Hale drove home four by going 2-for-5 of his own.
The two teams combined for 24 hits, 27 runs and eight errors in the ballgame. The 10-inning contest lasted four hours and 10 minutes.
The contest marked the second and final season meeting between UVU and BYU. It also closed a nine-match homestand for the Wolverines.
Utah Valley will now head to the Emerald City to open its 2019 WAC slate at Seattle University this weekend. The Wolverines and Redhawks will open a three-game league series at SU's Bannerwood Park in Bellevue beginning on Friday at 5 p.m. MT/4 p.m. PT.
