DENVER – Utah Valley's
Abby Doughty has been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week alongside Seattle U's Pitcher of the Week, Shianne Smith, respectively, for March 25-31. This is the first-ever honor for Doughty.
Doughty, a freshman outfielder from Vail, Ariz., hit .429 with a 1.143 slugging percentage in four games last week, including a series sweep against Kansas City. In the series against the Roos, Doughty went 6-for-11 (.545) with three home runs, a double and eight RBIs. She hit the go-ahead grand slam in the opener on Friday and the go-ahead two-run double in the first game of Saturday's twin bill. Doughty then capped the series with a pair of homers.
Doughty was instrumental in the sweep against Kansas City; down 3-0 in the fourth,
Basia Query hit a solo home run with one out in the inning before two base hits, a walk and a strikeout brought Doughty up with two down and the bases full. After working the count full, the left-handed hitting freshman snuck a 3-2 pitch just inside the foul pole down the line in left to give the Wolverines (8-15, 1-3) the lead for good in the opener against UMKC.
