OREM, Utah – A number of tightly contested matches went Iowa State's way, as the 11th-ranked Cyclones handed Utah Valley a 45-0 Big 12 Conference loss on Thursday evening at Lockhart Arena in Orem.
With the setback, UVU falls to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in Big 12 action, while No. 11 ISU improves to 3-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference competition.
"We had a few of our starters out of the lineup and some of our younger guys competing tonight, so I kind of expected the outcome in a couple of matches. Iowa State is a good team, there is no question about it," head UVU coach
Greg Williams said. "But I was pleased with how our guys went out there and went right after them and wrestled. We had the lead in a number of matches, but we need to learn to be better on bottom. Iowa State was very tough on top tonight and it showed."
With the contest starting at 197 pounds, Iowa State got off to a strong start with an opening pin from Joel Shapiro over three-time UVU NCAA qualifier and 17th-ranked
Tanner Orndorff to make it 6-0 Cyclones. With fifth-ranked UVU sophomore heavyweight
Tate Orndorff under the weather and out for the night, redshirt freshman
Chase Trussell then found himself deadlocked in a tightly contested contest against No. 9 Gannon Gremmel of ISU. Tied at 1-1 late in third period, the 2020 Southern Scuffle champion Gremmel picked up the go-ahead takedown but Trussell was awarded a penalty point via a stall call on Gremmel to make it 3-2 with under 20 seconds remaining. The Wolverine freshman then looked to escape the hold of Gremmel and send the bout to overtime, but Gremmel managed to hold on and earn the hard fought 3-2 victory.
At 125 pounds, Utah Valley redshirt freshman
Will Edelblute then got off to a quick start against No. 9 Alex Mackall by building an early 6-2 advantage. Edelblute picked up a pair of early takedowns along with a two-point nearfall to build the quick lead. Mackall then responded, however, with an escape, a takedown, and a pin just before the first-period clock expired to give the Cyclones a 15-0 advantage.
Then in a top-20 matchup at 133 pounds between No. 17
Taylor LaMont of UVU and No. 10 Todd Small of ISU, action went back and forth as both grapplers picked up a number of takedowns in a high scoring affair. Trailing 9-8, with just over a 1:00 left, the 2018 UVU NCAA qualifier and recent Greco-Roman U.S. Olympic Team Trials qualifier
Taylor LaMont took a 10-9 lead with a takedown on the edge of the mat. Small then quickly tied it at 10-10 with an escape, but
Taylor LaMont responded with his fourth takedown of the match to take a 12-10 lead with 40 seconds to go. Small again responded, however, with an escape and a last-second double-leg takedown with three seconds remaining to win the hard-fought bout by a score of 13-12.
The Cyclones then kept things going from there with back-to-back-to-back victories by fall at 141, 149 and 157 pounds to up their lead to 36-0.
At 165 pounds, Utah Valley junior
Koy Wilkinson got off to a strong start with an early takedown to jump out to a 2-0 lead over 2019 NCAA qualifier and 33rd-ranked Chase Straw. Straw answered back, however, with an escape and a pair of takedowns to take a 5-3 lead after the first period of action. Straw would go on to take the bout by a score of 11-5. Bumping up a couple of weight classes and competing in just his third match of the season, senior
Grant LaMont then put together a solid outing for the Wolverines at 174 pounds. But in the end, eighth-ranked Cyclone and 2019 NCAA qualifier Sam Colbray managed to earn a go-ahead third-period takedown along with an additional riding time point to take the contest by a score of 4-1.
In the final bout of the night at 184 pounds, Wolverine freshman
Jacob Armstrong then looked to put some points on the board for UVU, but in the end No. 14 Marcus Coleman of Iowa State overcame an early deficit to preserve the shutout. Armstrong was the aggressor early in the contest against the 2019 ISU NCAA qualifier, as he recorded a pair of early takedowns to build a quick 4-1 lead. But Coleman eventually responded with two escapes, a takedown, a penalty point, and a riding time point to earn a 7-4 come-from-behind victory.
Eight of Iowa State's 10 wrestlers on the night entered the contest nationally ranked, as ISU managed to record the shutout victory over UVU for the second consecutive season.
UVU was without the services of a number of starters on the night, as two-time NCAA qualifiers
Demetrius Romero and No. 9
Kimball Bastian were both out, as well as fifth-ranked heavyweight
Tate Orndorff.
With Saturday's annual UVU Open cancelled, the Wolverines will be off until on Friday, Jan. 24 when they will host No. 23 Stanford of the Pac-12 Conference at 7 p.m. at Lockhart Arena. Following the Stanford dual, UVU will return to Big 12 action against Wyoming on Sunday, Jan. 26 at Green River High School in Green River, Wyoming.
