SJSU responds by claiming nightcap, 10-1

The Wolverines will look to split the four-game non-conference weekend series on Sunday.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – After earning a 13-inning come-from-behind victory earlier in the day, San José State responded by winning the nightcap, 10-1, over Utah Valley in game two of a Saturday doubleheader at Excite Ballpark in San Jose.

SJSU (5-6) got a four-RBI game from Dalton Bowling and six strong innings from starter Sean Prozell on its way to claiming the second game of a Saturday twin bill and its second win of the four-game weekend set.

SJSU got things going early in the nightcap, by driving home four first inning runs to jump out to an early 4-0 advantage. With the bases full of Spartans and nobody out, Troy Viola started the scoring with a sac fly to center to make it 1-0. With two on and one out, Bowling then delivered the big blow with a three-run home run to left center to make it 4-0.

With San José State holding to the 4-0 lead in the fifth, the Wolverines (2-9) got a run back in the top of the frame to make it a 4-1 game. Freshman Trey Newman started the rally with his first collegiate hit, a single up the middle, and Connor Hall followed with a single to center to put two runners on with just one away. Mitch Moralez then doubled home Newman to get UVU on the board.

The Spartans then responded with two more runs in the last of the sixth and another in the seventh to extend their lead to 7-1. SJSU loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth and Connor Konishi worked a bases loaded walk to bring home the first run of the inning. Drew Williams then drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly to left to give San José State the five-run cushion. Following a leadoff walk in the seventh, Bowling drove in the runner all the way from first with a double off the wall in left for his fourth RBI of the ballgame.

The Wolverines looked to respond in the eighth by getting two runners in scoring position with two away, but SJSU's Dominic Eberle ended the threat by drawing an inning-ending groundout.

SJSU then put the game away in the last of the eighth with a trio of insurance runs to make it 10-1. Ruben Ibarra started the scoring in the frame with an RBI double to right center and Reece Hernandez followed with a two run single up the middle.

Prozell (1-0) struck out eight and allowed just one run on five hits over 6.0 innings of action to earn the win for SJSU. Eberle was credited with his first save for the Spartans after tossing a trio of scoreless innings, while UVU's Jaxson Otis (0-2) was tagged with the loss.

Hall led UVU at the plate in the nightcap by going 2-for-4 with a double, while Moralez finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and Newman went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Bowling led SJSU by going 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Earlier in the day, UVU claimed a 13-inning affair thanks to some late game heroics from senior Jake Berry. The Bay Area native Berry homered in the ninth and then drove in what proved to be the winning run in the 13th with a clutch RBI double to center to bring home pinch runner Jake Plecas.
